1. Is it safe at NIU?

Yes! Northern Illinois University has the advantage of being located in a smaller city with lower crime rates than more populous communities. But even in this relatively secure environment, people must act responsibly to ensure their own well-being. For more information, see our Safety & Security on Campus site.

 

2. Does the university provide health services for NIU students?

Yes! Health Services provides medical care to all students, full-time or part-time, who are registered and have paid on-campus tuition and fees. Students may use Health Services without being enrolled in the student Health Insurance Plan.

The university offers a Student Health Insurance Plan designed exclusively for NIU students. Enrollment in the plan is automatic for students registered for 9 or more on-campus hours and all international students.

 

3. Does NIU offer tutoring services for its students?

Yes! ACCESS provides campus-wide academic support and tutoring to undergraduate students. Services include free, individualized appointment-based tutoring in most 100- and 200-level general education courses and walk-in tutoring centers in Douglas, Lincoln, and Grant residence halls.

 

4. Is there an honors program?

Yes! Students in the honors program reap the benefits of learning from NIU's top faculty, exploring their interests in-depth and designing individual programs of studies. For more information, see the University Honors Program and the Undergraduate Catalog.

 

5. Can students get a job on campus?

Yes! Part-time jobs for students provide a valuable work experience and help to offset the costs of attending school. While attending NIU, a student may work on campus up to 20 hours per week. Employment opportunities are frequently available for students who demonstrate financial need through the College Work-Study Program. See Student Employment for opportunities!

 

6. Is there bus service on campus for students?

NIU maintains the largest student-run university bus system in Illinois. The Huskie buses are in operation seven days a week, while school is in session during the fall and spring semesters, during winter and spring break, and for limited hours during summer school. Routes cover the NIU campus and prime shopping areas throughout the city of DeKalb.

 

7. Can students bring their cars to campus?

8. What kinds of student organizations are there on campus?

Students can choose from more than 200 student organizations. It's easy to make friends and enjoy campus life by getting involved right away.Organizations reflect diverse interests such as: academic and professional, diversity and cultural, honor societies, media, military, performing groups, religious, residence halls, service, social justice and sports.

 

9. Who do I contact for information about phones, computers and technology services?

10. Is counseling available for NIU students?

Yes! Counseling and Student Development provides individual and group counseling, crisis intervention and referral, substance abuse assessments, eating disorder assessments, anger interventions, learning and study skills assistance, workshops, consultation (concerning mental health issues, programming, and organizations) and training for graduate students.

The Academic Advising Center assists students who have not chosen a major with identifying major and career options, choosing appropriate courses, clarifying life and educational goals and utilizing university resources.

 

11. What kind of assistance does the university provide for students with disabilities?

The university provides support services for students with a variety of disabilities. A wide range of services can be obtained including, but not limited to, housing, transportation, adaptation of printed materials, testing accommodations, sign language interpreters and advocacy with faculty and staff.

 

12. Where can I find information on tuition and fees?

Tuition and fee information is maintained by the Office of the Bursar.

 

13. Where can I find information on scholarships?

The NIU Scholarship Office maintains comprehensive information on scholarship opportunities.

 

14. Where can I find information on financial aid?

Information and applications for financial assistance are available from Student Financial Aid. That office also maintains information on Veteran's Assistance.

 

15. What are the residency requirements to qualify for in-state tuition?

17. Where can I purchase NIU clothing and gifts?

The University Bookstore offers a variety of apparel and gifts available for purchase online.

 

18 . Where do I buy tickets to NIU athletic events?

Tickets can be purchased online or at the ticket office at the NIU Convocation Center.

 

19. What are the school colors and mascot?

Yes! The NIU Parents Association provides meaningful opportunities for you to share in your son’s/daughter’s college experience.

 

21. Does NIU offer an alumni association for its graduates?

Yes! The NIU Alumni Association provides benefits, services and special programs to all NIU graduates.

 

22. How can I support NIU?

Gifts to the university through the NIU Foundation provide a dependable source of income to NIU's colleges, departments, and other support units, enabling them to offer scholarships, improve academic programs, support faculty development, and enrich campus life for students.

 

23. What kind of career planning services are offered to prepare students for life after graduation?
