What is the Dual Admissions Program?
The goal of the Dual Admissions Program is to provide a seamless and successful transition from a participating community college to Northern Illinois University (NIU).
Who is eligible?
You must meet the current admission criteria at a participating community college and NIU to be eligible for Dual Admissions.
Important Policies and Procedures
- You must apply for admission and sign a Statement of Intent to Participate before enrolling in classes at NIU to be eligible for the Dual Admissions Program.
- If you do not attend NIU for the term you list on the Statement of Intent to Participate form, you will be required to reapply for admission. The non-refundable application fee is good for one calendar year. If students sit out for more than one term they must also reapply for admission.
- Prior to enrolling in courses at NIU, students must attend an Orientation session.
- Once students earn an A.A. or A.S. degree they are no longer eligible for Dual Admissions.
What are the advantages?
- Students are admitted to NIU for a future term
(while attending a participating community college)
- Students can receive academic advising from both institutions
- Students may earn the A.A. / A.S. degree before or after taking classes at NIU and receive “Compact Benefits: Admission to the university, junior standing and all university general education requirements satisfied. Please Note: The Statement of Intent must be signed before students enroll in classes at NIU to be eligible.
- Students may enroll in classes at both NIU and the participating community college.
- Students have access to on-line degree audit reports (DARS), which details how courses transfer and apply toward NIU graduation requirements through NIU WebCONNECT
What are my next steps?
- Submit an application for admission at a participating community college.
- Submit an NIU Application for Undergraduate Admission. Please use the download and print application and do not file the on-line application. In section #18 please list the term for which you are applying. Please note: If the term you want to attend classes at NIU is later than the options listed, please check Fall, Spring or Summer and Write-In the desired start year. Please also see the Statement of Intent to Participate form (where you are able to choose your starting term.)
- File a Statement of Intent to Participate: Statement of Intent Form
- Please send Application for Undergraduate Admission and Statement of Intent to Participate together to:

Special Instructions for Sauk Valley Community College Students: Please bring the completed NIU application for admission and Statement of Intent to Participate form to an advisor in the Office of Admissions and Records at Sauk Valley. Do not mail it directly to NIU. Your Sauk Valley advisor will mail it to NIU along with your official transcripts. Please call (815) 288-5511 x 208 if you have questions or need assistance completing the required forms.
- Have official transcripts sent from all colleges and universities attended.
