Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Will I be paying undergraduate tuition or Law School tuition during my fourth year?

During your fourth year, you are still considered an undergraduate, and therefore will be paying undergraduate tuition.  However, students will be required to pay the Law Academic Excellence Fee and Law Materials Fee.  Because students are paying undergraduate tuition rates, they would remain eligible for Pell and Map grants.

Do I have to be a Political Science major with a Politics emphasis?

Yes.

What if I no longer want to continue in the program?

Students may remove themselves from the program at any time.  If they do so, they would simply complete the normal requirements for an undergraduate degree.

If I am a current NIU student, can I complete the program?

Yes, as long as you complete the requirements for admission.

If I am a transfer student, can I complete the program?

Yes, as long as you complete the requirements for admission.

Will my grades in my first year of law school (4th year of undergraduate) count toward my law school GPA or undergraduate GPA?

Any grade earned in a law school class will count toward the student's law school GPA.  No law school grade will be calculated in the student's undergraduate GPA.  The credit hours will show on the undergraduate transcript as transferred hours graded on a S/U basis.

Does participation in the program preclude completing law school in two and  one-half years?

No, increasing numbers of law students are completing law school in two and one-half years by attending summer school following the first and second years of law school.  This permits students to take the bar exam and begin working a semester earlier.

Can I take courses the summer before my fourth year to complete the 90 hours?

Summer courses maybe taken and will count towards your 90 hours.  Acceptance into the law school the following semester will depend upon your completion of the requirements for admission.

What was the median LSAT score of last year's class?
