NIU grad students can enhance their academic experience through research and teaching.

Graduate assistants are:

  • teaching assistants who aid in the instructional functions of the university and are engaged in oral instruction;
  • non-instructional teaching assistants who aid in the instructional functions of the university and do not have an involvement in oral instruction;
  • research assistants who assist faculty and staff with academic and other research; and
  • staff assistants who assist in roles other than teaching or research, such as residence hall advisers, counselors, administrative assistants or library assistants.

An application (PDF) is available online through the Graduate School, and NIU's Human Resource Services posts job openings.

Research

NIU's Graduate Student Grants and Fellowships Office collects and disseminates information on grant and fellowship opportunities from sources outside the university for NIU graduate students. NIU graduate students are invited to use the GSGFO’s resources for assistance in locating information on external grants and fellowships.

Teaching

Please check specific department Web sites for teaching assistant positions available. NIU's Faculty Development and Instructional Design Center also offers support for TAs.
