The nature of life at any university is a reflection of the community and larger society in which it is located. At Northern Illinois University, students enjoy the benefits of a friendly, small-town environment nestled into the western edge of a major metropolitan region. Along with the rich cultural and educational advantages students find at NIU, they also benefit from a strong commitment to public safety, as evidenced by the information presented in this report.
That commitment can be seen in the professionalism of our highly trained police force of more than 60 sworn officers; in our innovative approaches to campus safety (such as 24-hour Community Safety Centers in all of our residence halls); and in the array of safety training opportunities we make available to help students avoid becoming victims of crime, as well as in the comprehensive set of services we offer to those who require assistance.
This report provides an overview of all those services, as well as a thorough analysis of campus crime statistics. Taken in whole, it provides a snapshot of our comprehensive commitment to safety on campus, of which we are proud but always working to improve.
