Crime Statistics - Lorado Taft Field Campus

The Lorado Taft Field Campus is located adjacent to Lowden State Park near Oregon, Illinois. Its 141 acres border the Rock River and contain a variety of terrain including heavily wooded areas, open fields, and ravines. The Taft campus is an excellent resource for the study of natural ecosystems and the impact people have on them. Facilities and landscaping are maintained in a way that minimizes conditions that might pose a reasonably foreseeable hazard.

The campus hosts both environmental and conference programs year-round. More than 7,000 school children and their teachers from the northern Illinois region attend short-term residential environmental education programs each year. Additionally, over 3,500 people of various ages attend retreats or workshops in the conference program annually.

The Lorado Taft Field Campus has been fortunate in not experiencing any serious crimes to date, but such incidents conceivably could occur. Students and staff are expected to be circumspect and responsible for adopting such personal measures as may be appropriate for their circumstances to protect themselves and their possessions.

Law Enforcement/Security

Three regular Supportive Professional Staff employees reside on the Lorado Taft Field Campus and provide manager-on-duty oversight evenings and weekends when the office is closed. The manager on duty is responsible for dealing with problems as they arise and, if warranted, summoning the proper local law enforcement authority.

Reporting Procedures

Dial 9 for a local Oregon line, then 911 to report all emergencies or non-emergency criminal violations from a Lorado Taft telephone. Cell phone users should dial 911. Contact the main office to report any safety or security non-emergency by calling (815) 732-2111. NIU Lorado Taft gets support from the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office. All community members are encouraged to report all public safety incidents to the Lorado Taft Field Campus staff which will investigate the incident and if not already contacted will contact the fire department, police, or rescue squad as needed. If such staff is unavailable, local law enforcement authorities should be contacted directly.

When an incident occurs, an incident report is completed. Copies of this report are maintained at NIU Lorado Taft Field Campus as well as sent to the appropriate department on the main campus. NIU Lorado Taft Field Campus adheres to the NIU Student Code of Conduct. The Judicial Affairs Office on the main campus in DeKalb handles student disciplinary matters for this campus, as well as the main campus.

Access to Campus Facilities

With a high percentage of patrons being minor children, visitors to the Lorado Taft Field Campus are required to check in at the office prior to visiting the campus.

Policies

NIU Lorado Taft adheres to the drug, alcohol and sexual assault policies that are used on the main campus. In addition, all other policies and procedures governing this site are consistent with the policies and procedures outlined within this report for the DeKalb campus.
