The crime statistics were compiled by NIU University Legal Services in cooperation with the NIU Department of Police and Public Safety, campus officials having responsibility for oversight of student activities, and relevant local and state police agencies. The definitions utilized by NIU for all reports are from the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program. For statistical purposes, crime statistics reported to any of these sources are recorded in the calendar year the crime was reported.
A written request for statistical information is made on an annual basis to all university Deans, Directors, and known Campus Security Authorities. Statistical information is requested and provided to University Legal Services by individuals identified as Campus Security Authorities at NIU.
NIU officials participated in a training session in the spring of 2008 and subsequently conducted a confirmation review of the crime statistics for 2007, 2006, and 2005 prior to publishing the statistics in the 2008 version of the document. Identification of a number of interpretative variances resulted, and classifications of some previously published crime statistics were corrected for the current statistical report.
All of the statistics are gathered, compiled, and reported to the university community via this report. This information is available at the university website at www.safety.niu.edu, the University Legal Services website at www.univlegal.niu.edu/legalservices/clery/index.shtml and the Department of Police and Public Safety website at www.finfacil.niu.edu/PublicSafety. NIU University Legal Services submits the annual crime statistics published in this report to the United States Department of Education (DOE). The statistical information gathered by the United States Department of Education is available to the public through the DOE website.
