NIU Hoffman Estates opened for classes in fall 1992 to provide quality, affordable education, primarily for place-bound students, at a convenient location. NIU had offered courses in the north/northwest suburban area for over 25 years, and the Hoffman Estates center allowed the University to consolidate nearly 200 courses offered at 21 different sites in the suburban area.
The 46,000-square-foot center now serves more than 4,000 students a year, offering more than 80 classes per semester. Most classes are offered on evenings and Saturdays. During the day, the center serves as a training and conference facility.
All students live off campus.

Students, faculty, and staff are expected to be circumspect and responsible for adopting such personal measures as may be appropriate for their circumstances to protect themselves and their possessions.
A security guard is available Monday through Thursday from 5 p.m. to the close of campus, which is typically 10 p.m. to assist students, faculty and staff as situations arise. The campus is closed on most Sundays and weekends between semesters. Fire and burglar alarm systems are in place.
