Conducting Interviews

Pre-Interview Consideration

  • Highlight NIU facts, departmental/faculty research, organization structure, community, news articles, etc.
  • Conduct job talk, teaching demonstration, seminars, open sessions
  • Travel reimbursement; out of town candidates must be informed if they will be reimbursed for their travel 
  • Final itineraries, interview, department and university community should be sent to candidates
  • Request accommodations – dietary restrictions, ADA, etc.

The Interview

  • Designate hosts and escorts
  • Establish uniform interview questions: consult legal and illegal interview questions
  • Develop interview itinerary: include departments/individuals with similar areas of responsibilities and/or interest
  • Complete Interview Evaluation form

Post-Interview

  • Search committee meets to discuss qualifications of each applicant and make recommendation to the hiring official
  • Search committee contacts references
  • Hiring official communicates with finalist(s) – salary range, interest in position, questions, etc.
  • Second interview – campus/community visit (optional)
  • Be sure to thank the search committee for their time and efforts.
