History of the NIU Tip Line

The NIU Tip Line is based on the International Crime Stoppers program that was started in 1976. Realizing that criminal and/or student code violations are less serious in nature than felony matters, yet negatively impact the overall quality of life on our campus, concerned students and staff met with the local Crime Stoppers Board of Directors. Residence Hall Association & Student Association students along with members of the University Police, University Judicial Office, and the University Housing and Dining Services met to explore the development of a program offering incentives to students to report less serious criminal and student code violations.

From this meeting in April 1996, the NIU Tip Line emerged. The program provides the campus community with a vehicle to anonymously supply information about a crime or student judicial code violation. Those with information call 753-TIPS. Calls are processed by trained operators. Callers do not reveal their names and are assigned a code to ensure anonymity. Cash rewards are offered when information leads to an arrest or a finding of guilty through the student judicial code. The reward is handled as a blind cash pick-up at a pre-arranged location to ensure and protect the identity of the caller.
