Off-Campus & Non-Traditional Student Services at Northern Illinois University is proud to offer this free carpool service to students, faculty, and staff. This service is intended to reduce commuting costs, ease parking congestion on campus, and promote informal interactions among students, faculty, and staff at NIU. The IRS estimates that commuting costs (gas, maintenance, and depreciation) average about 55 cents/mile, which is over $330/month for a 50-mile, 3-day/week commute. Carpooling is a great way to cut those transportation costs by 50-75% or more, depending on the number of people in your carpool group.

The Carpool Connections service is a secure database that will match you up with other commuters in your area through anonymous e-mails generated within the database. You will be notified by e-mail when you have been matched with another commuter, but your personal information is not shared until you decide it should be. We are encouraging potential carpool participants to make their initial meeting at the Off-Campus & Non-Traditional Student Services lounge in the lower level of the Holmes Student Center, room 023J.
