The Department of Commuter and Non-Traditional Student Services at Northern Illinois University is proud to offer this free carpool service to students, faculty and staff. This service is intended to reduce commuting costs, ease parking congestion on campus and promote informal interactions among students, faculty and staff at NIU. The IRS estimates that commuting costs (gas, maintenance and depreciation) average about 34.5 cents/mile, that’s over $200.00/month for a 50-mile, 3-day/week commute.Car pooling is a great way to cut those transportation costs by 50-75% or more, depending on the number of people in your car pool group.
The Commuter Carpool Connections service is a secure database that will match you up with other commuters in your area through anonymous e-mails generated within the database. You will be notified by e-mail when you have been matched with another commuter, but your personal information is not shared until such time that you decide it should be. We are encouraging potential carpool participants to make their initial meeting in the Commuter Collegia at Holmes Student Center located in the basement of the Holmes Student Center, room 023J.
Take a few minutes to log in and create your user profile and in no time at all you could be part of a group of people interested in reducing commuter stress and parking congestion as well as saving money and the environment!
