Personnel Training

We work hard to stay up to date with the latest training in our field. Each year we attend up to 88 specialized training and continuing education courses. The majority of these trainings have been sponsored by the Northern Illinois Training Advisory Board and accredited by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board. Some of the topics that our sworn law enforcement officers and full-time civilian personnel are trained on include:

  • Abused/neglected child mandated reporting
  • Autism awareness
  • Clery Act compliance
  • Cultural diversity
  • Emergency management
  • Emergency medical dispatch
  • Emergency Medical Tech
  • Investigations
  • Paramedic
  • Police records management
  • Renewed hazmat awareness
  • Specialized crime scene processing
  • Technical security
  • Title IX
  • Violence Against Women Act (VAWA)

We work with community partners to provide the best possible police service. Annually, the NIU Police Department invites a representative from Safe Passage and the DeKalb County State Attorney’s Office to speak to each shift about various topics including domestic violence and Illinois law updates.

As spring approaches, NIU meteorologist Gilbert Sebenste conducts Weather Spotter training for all NIU Police Department personnel.
