Thirteen NIU students are in temporary campus housing this morning following a fire at an off-campus fraternity house. Two students were taken to Kishwaukee Hospital for observation but did not sustain serious injury.
The fire is believed to have started around 6 a.m. at the Omega Delta house, 835 Greenbriar in DeKalb. The privately-owned, off-campus structure sustained heavy damage.
NIU sent a bus to the scene to provide temporary shelter for the students and later transported them to a campus residence hall for short-term housing. NIU provided clothing, as many of the students fled the fire in pajamas. Representatives from the DeKalb County Red Cross were also on hand to provide supplies and emergency recovery services.
NIU President John Peters visited the students this morning and described them as “shaken but determined to carry on.”
“This is a great group of young men in a well-regarded service organization, and we are committed to helping them through this difficult time,” Peters said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the DeKalb Fire Department, the Illinois State Fire Marshal and the DeKalb Police.
