NIU community gets hands dirty April 19
to thank DeKalb, Sycamore

DeKalb — NIU Cares Day, a campus-wide day of service, is back for its second year.

Coordinated by Student Involvement and Leadership Development at Northern Illinois University, NIU Cares Day brings students, faculty and staff together to complete service projects that benefit the communities of DeKalb and Sycamore in order to thank them for their support of NIU.

On Saturday, April 19, NIU students, faculty and staff will take part in the day-long event, which will include service projects such as painting, cleaning, park clean-up, resurfacing playgrounds and landscaping. Renovations also are planned for area residential homes, thanks to a partnership with the City of DeKalb.

“The NIU Cares Day committee hopes that our students as well as staff members will continue to develop lives that involve community service,” said Becky Harlow, assistant director for Student Involvement and Leadership Development “Participating in volunteerism projects like NIU Cares Day will help lay the foundation for the value of giving back.”

NIU students who are interested in participating can sign up individually or with a residence hall floor, organization or group of friends. Faculty and staff members who are interested in serving as project site leaders can contact Harlow at for more information.

Registration and event information can be found online at

NIU Cares Day benefits greatly from product donations and monetary funds from caring donors: the more donations contributed to NIU Cares Day, the larger the scope of services that can be provided by NIU volunteers. Supplies needed range from rakes, shovels and trash bags to mops, hammers and paint brushes. To find out how to contribute, contact Harlow at (815) 753-6703 or
