NIU to offer aviation management degree in Rockford

DeKalb, Ill. — Starting this fall, Northern Illinois University will begin offering courses to help airplane mechanics take their careers to new heights.

The new emphasis in aviation management technology will allow those who hold an associate’s degree in aviation maintenance technology (such as the one offered at Rock Valley College) to take two more years of course work and earn a bachelor’s of science degree in the field.

“The course work will focus on things like project management, materials handling, quality control, supervision and finance and facilities management,” said Cliff Mirman, chair of the Department of Technology in NIU’s College of Engineering and Engineering Technology, which will administer the program. “Those who earn the degree will learn skills that should enhance their ability to move into management positions.”

Currently, NIU plans to offer the program exclusively in Rockford. The existence of the Rock Valley College associate’s degree program and continued growth of the Chicago Rockford International Airport make the area a natural market for the degree, explained Mirman.

The program is one of several offered by NIU’s College of Engineering and Engineering Technology that specifically target needs in the Rock River Valley.

“We are always looking for opportunities to enhance our programming in the Rockford area, and this seemed like a natural fit,” said Promod Vohra, dean of the NIU College of Engineering and Engineering Technology. “The airport has long been considered a key to the economic success of the region, and we are committed to helping educate the highly skilled workforce needed to keep that momentum moving forward.”
