NIU art grad to exhibit work at DeKalb Area Women’s Center

DeKalb – Northern Illinois University alumna, Melissa Laurich of Joliet, Ill., will present a portraiture exhibit at the DeKalb Area Women’s Center Galleries in August as part of the 2006 DeKalb Sesquicentennial Series. Laurich received her bachelor of fine arts degree in drawing in May 2006.

The exhibit presents close-cropped expressionistic portraits in oils, acrylics and mixed media. Through the paintings, Laurich conveys an emotional sense with color choice and brush strokes. She achieves the textured surfaces through experimentation and processing of materials. Some layers are broken down by sanding and built up in other areas with paint. Of her work, Laurich explains, “My focus is the connection between human experience and expression.” The artist can be contacted at

The public is invited to view the exhibit during August from 7 to 9 p.m. Fridays, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. the first and third Saturdays, from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, and by appointment at (815) 758-1351.

A mid-week closing reception will take place from 7 to 10 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29, and is open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

The DAWC Galleries are located at 1021 State Street in DeKalb. The accessible lift can be reached from the alley on the north side of the building. Parking is provided one-half block south off of 11th Street.
