Hundreds of school children to participate in Parade of Flags

DeKalb, Ill.—Nearly 500 fifth graders from DeKalb and Sycamore schools will march while carrying the international flags of more than 100 nations represented at Northern Illinois University during the sixth annual Parade of Flags on campus.

The parade will step off at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 23, from the east side of Huskie Stadium. The NIU ROTC Color Guard, DeKalb Fire Department Bag Pipers and several members of the Huskie Marching Band also will take part in the parade.

Parade participants will march along Lucinda Avenue to the Martin Luther King Commons, where Vice Provost Earl “Gip” Seaver will address the audience at noon, along with City Manager Mark Biernacki.

“Each year, Parade of Flags has been a really fun way to bring area schoolchildren to the NIU campus to celebrate global perspectives and people,” said Deborah Pierce, executive director of the Division of International Programs. “In International Programs, we very much appreciate the strong NIU partnership with the communities of DeKalb County.”
