DeKALB, Ill. — A new website has made it easier for NIU students to find money to offset the cost of their education.
The website, www.scholarships.niu.edu, allows students to create a simple demographic profile that helps identify dozens of scholarships for which they might be eligible.
“In the past, students could go to our website and search through lists of scholarships available by academic area,” says Scholarship Coordinator Dana Gautcher. “This improves upon that process by allowing them to enter information such as their year in school, their ethnicity or even their outside interests, which may unearth all kinds of scholarships that might otherwise have escaped their notice.”
Even simple profiles may return results allowing students to investigate 40 or more scholarships. They can select entries from that list for details on each scholarship (qualifications, deadlines, etc.) and often will find links to applications. All of the more than 400 scholarships found on the site (some of which make multiple awards per year) are available exclusively to NIU students and range in value from a few hundred dollars a year to a few thousand dollars.
Students also have the option of reviewing all scholarships.
“There are many, many scholarships available to students, but they need to take an active role in seeking them out, this site makes that process easier,” says Gautcher, who urges people to try the site soon. “Now is the time for students to be thinking about scholarships for next semester or next year,” she says.
