NIU to merge summer and fall commencement ceremonies

DEKALB, IL -- Administrators at Northern Illinois University today announced plans to merge summer and fall commencement ceremonies.

Beginning in August 2005, students who complete their graduation requirements at the conclusion of the summer term will be invited to attend commencement ceremonies in December. The spring (May) ceremony will not be affected.

“The change brings NIU’s graduation schedule into alignment with that of most other institutions in Illinois and other states,” explained Vice Provost Gip Seaver. “After reviewing the matter, now seemed an appropriate time to adopt a schedule similar to other universities around the state.”

The new policy will not affect the official graduation date or the graduation date shown on student transcripts, which will reflect the date when requirements were completed rather than the date of commencement ceremonies. . As is the case for the fall and spring semesters, diplomas will be distributed by mail following the verification of the degree by the Office of Registration and Records.

Students having specific questions about the timeline for completing their degrees should contact their academic advisors.
