to host Venezuelan Culture Day

DeKalb – Venezuelan Culture Day returns to DeKalb Friday, May 6, with art, music, a dance performance and refreshments.

The Northern Illinois University Latino Resource Center, NIU Center for Latino and Latin American Studies, DeKalb Area Women’s Center (DAWC) and Venezuelan Consulate are hosting the event, which kicks off with artists receptions from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the DAWC, 1021 State Street, and from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at the Latino Resource Center, 515 Garden Road. A mayoral proclamation will be read in English and Spanish to welcome the concurrent month-long exhibitions, both on campus and in the community.

Art exhibits will be in place from May 1 to 27 at the two gallery sites, featuring the work of Venezuelan-born artists Montserrat Alsina (of Colibri Gallery/Studio), Eduardo Angulo-Salas and Jenny Ramos.

The Latino Resource Center gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Parking is available for a fee on campus in the NIU Visitors Lot and with restricted hours on Garden Road. The Latino Center has an accessible ramp on the north side of the building. For further information, call (815) 753-1986.

The DAWC public gallery is open from 7 to 9 p.m. Fridays during May or by appointment. Free parking is available one-half block south of the building off Eleventh Street.
