NIU Department of Public Safety to stage mock DUI

DEKALB, Ill. -- The NIU Department of Public Safety will stage a “Mock DUI”, 7 p.m., Oct. 14, in Parking Lot C2 on the east side of the NIU Convocation Center.

This realistic enactment of an automobile accident involving a drunk driver will use actors in the roles of drivers and passengers, some of whom will be trapped in the vehicle and require extrication.

The DeKalb Fire Department will provide personnel to rescue the “victims” of the accident and a helicopter from OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford will be on the scene to assist as well. Students enrolled in emergency medical technician classes and paramedic classes in the EMS Department of Kishwaukee Community Hospital will use this event as a training opportunity. They also will be providing the fake blood for the participants.

Members of Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity will be providing the role players and will be conducting all of the set up and take down for the event. Lovett’s Towing in DeKalb will provide vehicles for the crash.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving, which gave an award to the NIU Department of Public Safety after last year’s mock crash, will be on hand to distribute educational materials.

The NIU Convocation Center will provide materials and logistical support for the dramatization. The Mock DUI will take place just before an event called “Yell Like Hell,” which takes place at 8 p.m., at the Convocation Center.
