DeKalb - The NIU Campus Activities Board Concerts Committee is proud to present Howie Day and Nickel Creek with special guest David Berkley performing at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, in the Duke Ellington Ballroom of NIU’s Holmes Student Center.
Day has toured the college circuit, and with his first release on Epic Records, “Stop All The World Now,” has stepped onto the national stage and into the spotlight.
The 24-year-old songwriter opened for Sting, Jack Johnson, Sheryl Crow and Tori Amos, before releasing his latest album, which was recorded in London and produced by Youth, who also produced albums by The Verve and Dido. When Day performs live, he creates unique songs every time by using live loop samples and delay pedals to make his own band while he plays guitar and sings.
Nickel Creek, comprised of fiddle player Sara Watkins, guitarist Sean Watkins and mandolin player Chris Thile, have been together for more than 10 years. The band won a Grammy after being nominated four times, and has been named by Rolling Stone as one of the “Best of 2002.” Its album, “This Side,” has sold more than 500,000 copies. They bring a “new grass” sound to the table with their “Beatles-flavored psychedelic, left of center alt rock, pop, folk and more.”
Day and Nickel Creek are on a co-headlining tour and take turns closing the night. Both bands play 60 to 75-minute sets. For the DeKalb stop, Day will wrap up the show.
David Berkely will open with his heartfelt sound. The Harvard graduate is slowly gaining momentum and starting to hear airplay on radio stations across the nation. Berkley’s second album, “After the Wrecking Ships,” has been acknowledged by The New York Times and Rollingstone.com, and is in its second pressing.
Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets go on sale Oct. 15 and can be purchased at the Holmes Student Center Box Office or by phone (815) 753-3146. Price is $15 for NIU students with ID and $20 for general admission.
