A team of four graduate-level accounting students from Northern Illinois University placed in the top 10-nationally in the third annual National Tax Case Study competition sponsored by The Deloitte Foundation, a non-profit arm of professional services firm Deloitte & Touche USA LLP.
Members of the team were, Kristie Adkins and Bill Moore, of Elgin; Paul Freidel of St. Charles and Colin Boyd, of Sycamore.
In the competition, teams have five hours to complete a complex, hypothetical case study that tests the students’ knowledge on a variety of tax topics. This year’s national finalists are: Brigham Young University, University of Central Florida, University of Denver, University of Kansas, University of North Carolina-Charlotte, and Utah State University.
“The panel of judges that evaluated each team’s written response was impressed with the high caliber of solutions prepared by the students,” said Mark M. Chain, president of the Deloitte Foundation and national managing partner of human resources management for Deloitte. “Knowledge, teamwork, and a focus on complex, real-world issues were on vivid display when the teams met in eight regional sites across the U.S. On behalf of Deloitte, we offer our congratulations to each winning team and hope that all of the participating schools found the program to be a good investment of their time.”
The NIU team was recruited by faculty of the university’s nationally ranked and recognized program in accountancy. They met weekly for two months to prepare for the Oct. 16 regional competition at the University of Wisconsin. There they defeated teams from the University of Wisconsin, Marquette University and the University of Illinois.
“We are very proud of the team’s accomplishments in this challenging competition,” said NIU Accountancy Professor Kate Mantzke, who coached the team.
The NIU Department of Accountancy is currently ranked 26th in the nation among undergraduate programs by U.S. News and World Report, and in the top 10 for both graduate and undergraduate programs in a survey conducted by the Public Accounting Report.
