NIU offers summer online courses

DeKalb, Ill.--The NIU College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is pleased to announce an online summer curriculum with credit and non-credit options.

Teachers also may select to take the courses for credit toward Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDU). The courses include:

  • Literary Journeys (English 497) - Explore four literary classics: "The Epic of Gilgamesh," "The Odyssey," "Candide" and "Huckleberry Finn."
  • Maps and Mapping (Geography 256) - Study the concept of maps as tools of modern communication and visualization.
  • Thai Beliefs and Cultures (Anthropology 498) - Explore how the Thai worldview differs significantly from the Western outlook.
  • Cardiovascular and Muscular Health (Biological Sciences 493) - Learn about the functions of major organ systems under both normal and disease states.

Online courses are an ideal option for anyone who travels during the summer or would prefer to work from home on a flexible schedule. The courses in literature, anthropology, biology and geography reflect the best practices of NIU's award-winning integration of teaching and technology. Classes occasionally meet face-to-face or for special field trips. For example, English 497 students will take a July luncheon cruise on the Celebration Belle, the largest luxury excursion vessel on the Upper Mississippi, to supplement their study of "Huckleberry Finn."

All courses begin the week of June 14 and run during NIU's regular summer school session, concluding by Aug. 6.
