Distinguished labor historian to speak on Brazil

DeKalb, Ill.--Professor John French, a distinguished labor historian at Duke University, will present a lecture on the Brazilian labor movement at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 25, in Cole Hall 101.

The public lecture is titled "Another World Is Possible: The Rise of the Brazilian Workers' Party and the Prospects for Lula's Government." The discussion will focus on former union chief Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who in 2002 became Brazil's first working-class president. Brazil is the world's fifth largest country, with a population of 170 million.

"John French is an accomplished historian and a riveting speaker," NIU History Professor Rosemary Feurer said. "His talk addresses how Lula rose from the ranks of an ordinary worker to the Brazilian presidency. Brazil is a country that should be on the radar screen of any U.S. citizen. Lula is challenging many U.S. assumptions on globalization and U.S. control of globalization in the third world."

French is a historian of modern Latin America, with a specialization in Brazil. He is the author of several books and numerous scholarly articles. Since 1984, French has served as co-coordinator of the Latin American Labor History Conference held in April of each year at Duke. In 2001, he was appointed director of the Duke Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies.
