Kuhn named senior research associate at NIU

DeKalb, Ill. — Greg Kuhn, who formerly served as village manager of Clarendon Hills, has accepted a position as a senior researcher at Northern Illinois University’s Center for Governmental Studies.

The job is a homecoming of sorts for Kuhn, who graduated from the university’s nationally respected Master’s in Public Administration program in 1982. After earning his degree, he spent four years as an assistant city manager in Skokie and five years as city manager in Clarendon Hills before starting his own consulting firm in 1993, which was combined with the PAR Group in 1997.

Woven throughout his career has been the constant thread of NIU.

At various times over the last two decades Kuhn has done work for CGS and taught classes in the MPA program at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. He also returned to NIU for his doctorate in public management, which he secured in 2002.

In his new post as a senior research associate, Kuhn will have the opportunity to continue doing much of the same work he did as a consultant, helping cities and towns with the nuts and bolts of running an efficient municipality. However, he also will have the freedom to study and contribute to the latest theories in the field of municipal management – particularly regarding leadership, governance, strategic planning and organizational development.

The opportunity to combine those two disciplines is what made the new job attractive to Kuhn.

“Ultimately, I want to serve as a bridge between practitioners of public administration and researchers. Working at CGS allows me to do precisely that,” said Kuhn. “Our region is in a constant state of flux, and communities need help to keep up with the ever-changing challenges that they are facing.”

Kuhn’s dedication to that work made him a perfect fit for the CGS, said director Robert Gleeson.

“Our goal is to work with the towns of this region to help them create economically and socially sustainable and globally competitive communities,” said Gleeson. “His history with the center and his professional experience make him uniquely qualified to step in and help us further our mission of providing city managers with the skills and the tools they need to achieve that goal.”

The 46-year-old Kuhn currently resides in Clarendon Hills with his wife and their two daughters.
