Author Laura Kipnis to give 'scandalous' talk on March 2

DeKalb, Ill.--Author Laura Kipnis, a professor of communication at Northwestern University, will visit campus next week to give a presentation titled, "Scandalous Americans."

The talk, which features four case studies of political scandal in the 1990s, will be held at 8:45 p.m. Tuesday, March 2, in the Heritage Room of Holmes Student Center. The presentation is open to the public.

Kipnis has authored three books, as well as numerous essays and reviews for such publications as the Village Voice, Harper's and the New York Times Magazine. She also has produced video essays that have been screened and broadcast in North America, Europe, Japan and Australia.

In her latest book, "Against Love: A Polemic," Kipnis sheds light on the hypocrisies that shape American views of marriage and adultery. Says a Salon.com review, "In 'Against Love,' Laura Kipnis considers why the institution of marriage compels us to stray -- for good reason."

Kipnis's scholarly research focuses on the intersections of politics, body and psyche--with detours through aesthetics, love, Marx, adultery, scandal, Freud, pornography and the legacy of the avant-garde. She has received grants and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The NIU Graduate School Colloquium Committee and the Department of Communication are sponsoring the visit from Kipnis.
