NIU Accountancy programs retain Top 10 rankings

DeKALB, IllNorthern Illinois University’s accounting program is once again ranked among the elite in the nation by the Public Accounting Report.

The results of the magazine’s annual survey of accounting faculty around the country ranked the NIU undergraduate program tenth while the graduate program ranked twelfth.

This marks the third consecutive year that the undergraduate program has ranked in the top 10 and the fourth straight year that the graduate program has made the top 20. The undergraduate program was also ranked 24th in the nation by U.S. News and World Report Magazine.

“Our goal is sustained excellence, and earning rankings like these from our peers year after year is one measure that helps us know that we are achieving that goal,” said Greg Carnes, who is chair of the Department of Accountancy.

“This type of recognition is a tribute to our outstanding faculty who have worked so diligently to uphold our program’s longstanding reputation for excellence,” says Carnes. “It is also a reflection on the quality of our students and the type of support we are provided by the college, the university and our alumni. To consistently succeed on this level requires all of those things.”

Also aiding in building the program’s reputation, says Carnes, is that it has evolved in recent years to offer top notch programs in a number of areas.

“Over the last decade we have added or expanded several programs—our master’s of accounting science program has tripled in size; we have added a master’s of science in taxation; and now, in addition to our highly respected CPA Review, we also offer courses to help people prepare for the CIA (Certified Internal Auditor) and CMA (Certified Management Accountant) exams. We have the whole package, and very few programs can offer that kind of excellence across the board,” Carnes says.

The survey, conducted annually by the Public Accounting Report, asks academics in accounting programs across the country a simple open-ended question: “What are the top five accounting programs you would recommend to someone considering the accounting profession?” The NIU undergraduate accounting program has been a fixture on the list since the survey debuted 23 years ago.

NIU is one of the smallest schools ranked on the list, and sits ahead of institutions such as the University of Wisconsin, Indiana University and Penn State University. The top three rated undergraduate programs were (in order) the University of Texas, the University of Illinois and Brigham Young University.
