NIU Glass Gallery hosts
student show ‘Marking Time’

DeKalb – How are a snow fence, a correction reel from a typewriter and a cushion of fat all related?

These are some of the varied materials selected by artist Jessica Rose Witte to “mark time.” The Glass Gallery in the Holmes Student Center at Northern Illinois University will host Witte’s “Marking Time” exhibition from Aug. 29 to Sept. 8.

“The title was chosen for its references to both marching in place, and noting the passage of time. The artwork, ranging in material from cast cherry-scented soap to video, comments on either the passage of time, complacency or both.” explains Witte, who will receive her master of fine arts degree from NIU in December.

The work included in “Marking Time” spans this past year, with several sculptures created over the summer specifically for the show. The artist’s work recently has been exhibited at the Rockford Museum and the Berkeley Art Center, with October engagements scheduled in Purchase, N.Y., and Chicago. Witte is included in the Amity Art Foundation Collection and the Harold Washington Library Archives among others.

The public is invited to attend the show, especially the opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 2. The Holmes Student Center is located at the corner of Normal Road and Lucinda Avenue in DeKalb, and the gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Street parking is available on Normal, and paid parking is available in the visitor’s lot off Carroll Drive. The NIU Campus Activities Board Visual Arts Committee sponsors this event. The exhibition is NIU Student Association allocated, free, and open to all.
