NIU offers early move-in opportunity
for DeKalb County freshmen

DeKalb — Northern Illinois University is offering incoming freshman from DeKalb County an opportunity to beat the Move-In Day rush, and get their college careers off to a running start.

Interested freshmen, currently residing in DeKalb County, can move into campus residence halls Tuesday, Aug. 17, between 9 a.m. and noon. That is two days prior to the official Move-In Day when more than 5,000 students are expected to descend upon residence halls.

In return for preferred move-in status, those students must agree to work as NI-Guides on Move-In Day. The NI-Guides are a group of student volunteers who assist other students moving into residence halls and serve as goodwill ambassadors for the university on that day. Freshmen from DeKalb County who are enrolling this fall, but who will be living at home, are also eligible to sign-on as NI-Guides.

Students participating in the program will get an NI-Guides T-shirt, and a free ticket to the Huskie Bash. To help them prepare, they will also receive training in customer service and Huskie spirit, says coordinator of the Huskie Guides, Phylis Dupre.

“It is just a wonderful way for students to start their NIU experience,” says Dupre. “Not only do they get to avoid the long lines on Move-In Day, it also allows them to get a head start in meeting people and immediately involves them in campus life.”

Students interested in participating in this program should call NIU Student Housing and Dining at (815) 753- 2855.
