Teachers headed to NIU in search of 'New Ideas'

DeKalb, Ill.--With a close presidential election predicted for November, NIU's New Ideas Conference, slated for Friday, April 30, is sure to help teachers enliven lessons of democracy in their classrooms next fall.

Now in its 23rd year, NIU's New Ideas Series attracts middle school, high school and community-college level teachers to the DeKalb campus for professional development. Teachers will meet with colleagues from other educational institutions, learn about successful teaching projects and hear about the latest research findings from NIU scholars.

Featuring several of the university's most distinguished faculty, the conference will focus on New Ideas in History and Political Science, with a special emphasis on the upcoming 2004 election.

Presidential Teaching Professor Gary Glenn of the Department of Political Science will discuss the Electoral College, and Presidential Research Professor David Kyvig of the Department of History will speak on George W. Bush and the 22nd Amendment, which defines presidential terms of office. The two professors will team up with Professor Art Ward, an NIU expert on Supreme Court issues, to present an afternoon panel titled, "What Happened in 2000: A Coup d'Etat or Politics as Usual?"

The New Ideas conference will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday, April 30, in Holmes Student Center on campus. Registration begins at 8 a.m. The fee of $145 covers lunch, materials and certification credits.
