NIU job fair numbers hint at improving economy

DeKALB - The growing roster of companies signing up to recruit on the Northern Illinois University campus this fall hints at an improving economy, university officials say.

“The list of participating employers for our Oct. 15 job fair is filling up much more quickly than last year,” says Jean Callary, assistant director of NIU’s Career Planning and Placement Center. “Last year’s event drew 125 companies and we are expecting to top that number by 15-20 percent this year. In the past, that type of growth has coincided with improving economic times.”

Job fairs at NIU have traditionally been some of the largest on-campus job fairs in the nation, but employer turnout for the event hit an all-time low in the spring of 2002 when only 93 companies came to recruit. The all-time high for the event was in the spring of 1998 when a red-hot economy helped spur a turnout of 240 companies.

Indications from employers so far this year are that management and marketing majors are currently in greatest demand. However, a high percentage of employers have indicated an interest in “all majors,” a clear message that aptitude and attitude are more important in this market than completion of a particular academic program, Callary said.

The job fair will take place from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the NIU Convocation Center, 1525 W. Lincoln Highway, on the west side of the university campus in DeKalb.

A list of participating employers is available at www.niu.edu/cppc, the Career Planning and Placement Center (CPPC) website.  Companies interested in participating can get more information by calling Callary at (815) 753-8345, or by sending a message to jcallary@niu.edu.
