NIU graduate students plan annual retreat
for Adult and Higher Education students, faculty

DeKalb — Graduate students and faculty in the adult and higher education program within the Northern Illinois University Department of Counseling, Adult and Health Education are gathering Saturday, Nov. 1, for their annual one-day retreat.

Sessions run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Camp Algonquin in Algonquin, Ill. The retreat is open to all master’s and doctoral students in adult and higher education as well as faculty members, alumni and anyone interested in enrolling in the program.

Adult and higher education is a broad field, encompassing many sub-fields such as the basic adult education of literacy through higher education, corporate training, community development and social movements.

The retreat provides formal and informal learning opportunities for both prospective and admitted students related to the many interests noted above as well as many helpful “how to” sessions on program requirements.

For example, master’s students might be interested in discussions regarding capstone learning experiences and job search strategies. Programs planned for doctoral students include discussions on the qualifying exam, and many issues related to dissertation research and writing.

“The retreat is not only informational, it is also an experience for students and faculty to replenish CAHE’s spirit of scholarly development through academic cohesiveness,” said Sheila Milan, doctoral student and retreat committee member.

This gathering will include a day of presentations and networking related to employment opportunities, emerging issues within the field, such as environmental social movements, and international affairs. Other sessions include panel discussions featuring recent graduates, both at the master’s and doctoral levels, and new areas in the adult and higher education curriculum.
