Q. Why should I have an NIU Onecard ID?
A. A Northern Illinois University OneCard is your campus ID if you are a student, faculty, staff, or retiree. It is important to keep with you at all times for identification, and for other functions accessed by your card. For example, if you live in the Residence Halls you will need your card for door access and it is the only method of doing laundry on campus.
Q. What does my NIU OneCard ID do?
A. A OneCard ID is your multipurpose identification card that accesses all campus functions. The card is especially used by students who live in the residence halls. It is used to gain entrance to the halls and to access meal options. Find out about all of the OneCard Uses.
Q. How do I obtain my OneCard ID?
A. STUDENTS: You must be registered for your classes, or assigned a scheduled orientation date in order to get your OneCard ID. Please visit the Getting My Onecard ID page for more information.

Q. How much does it cost to get my OneCard ID?
A. If you have never had an NIU OneCard, your first card is free.
Q. What if I lose my OneCard ID?
A. If an NIU OneCard ID is lost, a $25.00 replacement charge is assessed. Faculty, staff and retirees can pay by cash or check. Students can pay by cash or check, and can also charge the replacement cost to their bursar account.
Q. What if my OneCard ID is falling apart?
A. If a OneCard is falling apart and we receive the front and back pieces of the currently active card, the replacement cost is $5.00. Faculty, staff, OCR Members, and retirees can pay by cash or check. Students can pay by cash or check, and also can charge the replacement cost to their bursar account.
Q. Can I have a OneCard mailed to me?
A. No. For security purposes, we do not mail OneCards. Cards must be picked up in person by the student at one of NIU's four campuses.

Q. What are Huskie Bucks? Are they the same as the TCF Bank Account?
A. No. A Huskie Bucks Account and a TCF Bank Account are totally separate, though they both are on the same NIU OneCard.
Huskie Bucks is a prepaid debit program that is used for purchasing food at participating restaurants and vendors, making copies, doing laundry, and many other designated services.
The TCF Bank Account option is a regular bank account with the TCF National Bank. The NIU OneCard can then be used as an ATM card or debit card that pulls from the TCF checking account. The card can be used anywhere in the United States for ATM transactions or Debit purchases. View the TCF Bank Account TCF Bank Account page for additional information.
If a OneCard has both a Huskie Bucks Account and a TCF Bank Account on it at the same time, the monies do not get confused because only Huskie Bucks machines can access the Huskie Bucks monies, and only ATM/Debit Machines can access the debit funds.

Q. How do I open a Huskie Bucks Account?
A. A Huskie bucks debit account can be set up on your OneCard ID at any time during the school year. Please view the Opening the Account page for complete details.
Q. How can I deposit money to my (or my student's) Huskie Bucks Account?
A. There are multiple easy ways to deposit money into a Huskie Bucks Account: Online via the web, at the OneCard or Bursar's Offices, VTS machines, and by mail. Visit the Deposit Options page for more detailed instructions.
Q. Can I charge Huskie Bucks to my credit card or debit card?
A. Yes. These huskie bucks transactions are only accepted via the Internet. American Express, MasterCard, and Discover cards are accepted. You may also deposit to a Huskie Bucks Account using an "e-check" which requires a bank routing number and a checking account number. Please view the Deposit Options page.
Q. Can I charge Huskie Bucks to my (or my student's) Bursar Account?
A. Yes: Students who will be living in the residence halls in an upcoming semester may open a huskie bucks account through Housing and Dining and charge the money to their bursar account. (A bursar account is the student account where tuition and housing fees are billed. Each student at NIU has a bursar account to handle the payment of bills to the University.) Q. When will the Huskie Bucks that I had charged to my Bursar Account be available?
A. Once students have elected to have Huskie Bucks billed to their bursar accounts through Housing and Dining, the money will usually be ready for use the week before the semester starts.
Q. What happens to any unused Huskie Bucks at the end of the semester?
A. Huskie Bucks do not expire, so any unused funds will carry over to the next semester. However, any account with a balance of $5.00 or more, showing no activity for a period of one year will be charged an inactivity fee of $5.00 per month. This does not mean we will bill you each month, but rather this inactivity fee is only subtracted from the remaining balance of your Huskie Bucks Account until it reaches $0.00 and is closed.
Q. Can I use my Huskie Bucks to buy books?
A. No. Huskie Bucks cannot be used to buy books for classes.
Instead, NIU students receiving financial aid can have an option to charge books and school supplies to their Bursar Account. Only students who have Financial Aid can utilize this feature. View the Bookstore Charge System page for more information concerning bookstore charges.
