OneCard Frequently Asked Questions

What is an NIU OneCard and why should I have one?
A Northern Illinois University OneCard is your campus ID if you are a student, faculty, staff, alumni or annuitant. It is important to keep with you at all times for identification, and for other privileges linked to your card. For example, if you live in the Residence Halls you will need your card for after-hours door access and it is the only method of doing laundry on campus.

  • Huskie Bucks is an optional Prepaid Debit Account to be used for copying, laundry in the Residence Halls, and food services on and off campus. This can easily be set up on your student's OneCard before school starts.
  • TCF National Bank is the only bank that has a branch located on NIU's campus.  TCF Bank offers a Totally-Free Checking Account / ATM Services to students at NIU.  The student then has the option to link the OneCard ID to this account and then may use it as an ATM/Debit card.
  • Your student's weekly Meal Plan allows him to eat in the residence halls. This is done through Housing and Dining prior to the start of the semester and is accessed with the student's OneCard ID.  NOTE: This option is only available for students living in the residence halls.

  • Residence Hall Door Access is set up on the card by Housing and Dining for students living in the residence halls. This is set up automatically just before the beginning of each semester.

Is Huskie Bucks the same as the TCF Bank Account?
No: A Huskie Bucks Account and a TCF Bank Account are totally separate, though they both are on the same NIU OneCard.

Huskie Bucks is a prepaid debit program that is only used for:

  1. Buying food on the DeKalb NIU Campus
  2. Buying food at select vendors around the DeKalb NIU Campus
  3. Making Copies on NIU Campus (DeKalb, Hoffman Estates, Naperville and Rockford)
  4. Doing laundry on the DeKalb NIU Campus

The TCF Bank Account Option is a regular bank account with the TCF National Bank. The NIU OneCard can then be used as an ATM card or debit card that pulls from the TCF checking account. The card can then be used anywhere in the United States for ATM transactions or Debit purchases.

If a OneCard has both a Huskie Bucks Account and a TCF Bank Account on it at the same time, the monies do not get confused because only Huskie Bucks machines can access the Huskie Bucks monies, and only ATM/Debit Machines can access the debit funds.

Can I have my OneCard mailed to me?
No: For security purposes, we do not mail OneCards anywhere. In addition, to make your first OneCard we will need you to come by our office so we can take your picture and get your signature on our equipment.

Where is your office located?
Our office is located in the lower level of the NIU Holmes Student Center, across the hall from the University Bookstore.
