I chose my major because … teaching is more than transferring information to students. Learning is a continuous process and I want to make that process exciting and interesting for students.

My favorite class or professor at NIU is … Mary Costello’s Children’s Literature (LTLA 362). I thoroughly enjoyed this class for the wonderfully illustrative children’s picture books and novels that were explored. Through this class, I fell in love with many books and found joy in reading. I learned how much literacy can do for students and how I can make reading even more interesting.

My favorite thing to do on campus is …immerse myself into volunteering for school and community functions. I enjoy contributing my time to students and organizations to raise funds or towards the common goal.

Outside of the classroom, my favorite thing at NIU that really enhances my experience here is … the many organizations and services that are offered at NIU. I have enjoyed exploring what is out there and they all offer valuable experiences.

When I have free time … I go to the Recreation Center, scrapbook, and spend time with friends.

One thing I wish I knew about actual college life before I got here is … how fast my college career would fly by. Freshmen year, I had tried everything and I wish I spent more time enjoying college and seeking new experiences.

One positive thing I have learned about myself since coming to NIU is … I do not rely on others to get the job done.

If I was guaranteed success, I would ... be an inspiring and effective teacher to students. I believe it is important to continuously look for ways to improve my teaching.  Improving on my career is one step towards success in life.

After graduation, I plan to … travel to Japan to teach English to students. Upon returning, I hope to start my career as an elementary teacher in Illinois.

The one NIU experience I will always remember will be … through the OHANA peer mentor program, I learned many valuable lessons important to life. Being guided by mentor Michelle Bringas, and guiding my own protégés, I learned so much more about myself!
