I chose my major because I have wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember. I chose to major in special education because I want to help the students that are struggling. I dont want any child to fall through the cracks, and I think each child deserves a chance to achieve their dreams!
My favorite class or professor at NIU is TLSE 375 with Sharon Young. She inspires me to be a great teacher, and always has a practical classroom application for everything she teaches us. She provides a wonderful classroom environment and is a great example for me as a future educator.
My favorite thing to do on campus is hangout with my friends. We like to have a cookout or just walk around campus. My favorite spot to walk is at the lagoon; it is so pretty in the fall!
Outside of the classroom, my favorite thing at NIU that really enhances my experience here is The Learning Center in Gabel Hall. It has everything I need for my education classes, and I know that I can always find someone from my classes down there.
When I have free time, I like to
In my rare very rare free time, I love to go out to eat. There are some great little restaurants in DeKalb and Sycamore. You just have to find them.
One thing I wish I knew about actual college life before I got here is
I wish I knew how expensive it would be on my own. Aside from college expenses such as books and food, it costs money just to go rent a movie, order a pizza or even drive to Wal-Mart! I wish I had saved more money from my part-time job in high school.
One positive thing I have learned about myself since coming to NIU is although I am great at procrastinating, I am great and keeping myself accountable. I can be more independent and successful on my own than I ever thought possible, and I really enjoy being able to complete a task and know that I was able to do it on my own.
If I was guaranteed success, I would find the cause and a cure for autism. I think this is a disorder that is growing around the world, and if I knew I could find a cure, I would be willing to do almost anything. It would be great to know I would be helping so many people.
After graduation, I plan to work as a special education teacher. I do not know what age I would prefer to teach; right now, they all seem fascinating. I hope to work somewhere near my home so I can be close to my family. Someday I would like to come back to NIU and work on a graduate degree to become a school administrator.
The one NIU experience I will always remember will be
when we had a snow day during my freshmen year. All my friends and I played football and had sack races in the snow. It was a great relaxing day full of many laughs!
