I chose my major because …
I have always wanted to help people, particularly children, because they do not always have a trusting or trustworthy advocate. My favorite classes at NIU are … Experience in Fiction and Children's Literature. One of my other passions besides teaching children is reading, and both of these courses helped me expand my library.
My favorite thing to do on campus is … go to the concerts at the Convocation Center. My favorites so far have been Nelly & the St. Lunatics and Kanye West.
Outside of the classroom, my favorite thing at NIU that really enhances my experience here is … the T.E.A.C.H. House. I have lived there my entire NIU career; it is home to me now. I get to enjoy living amongst people who share common goals, experiences and views, but there are enough differences between us where I am constantly learning.
When I have free time, I like to … if I had free time, I would read, draw, watch cartoons, play The Sims 2 on my computer and, of course, hang out with my friends.
One thing I wish I knew about actual college life before I got here is … there are a lot of distractions and not everyone is here for the same reason. You have to responsible enough to know when it is time to work and when it is time to be distracted.
One positive thing I have learned about myself since coming to NIU is … I am capable of a lot more than I ever gave myself credit for, and I have the ability to make the right choices for myself.
If I was guaranteed success, I would ... become a superhero. I am aware that “with great power comes great responsibility” (Spiderman), but I am willing to take that kind of responsibility, especially if I am helping people. Plus, superheroes get to wear weird outfits and no one makes fun of them.
After graduation, I plan to … teach. I may even pursue a career as a school administrator so I can reach and influence a larger group of students.
The one NIU experience I will always remember will be ... winning T.E.A.C.H. House Leader of the Year. I have never been more proud of myself then at that moment when our coordinator read off all of the wonderful things my colleagues nominated me for.
