I chose my major because … I was interested in the way that people interact with one another, especially when it comes to different socioeconomic backgrounds, races and also ages. I was also drawn to sociology because I felt like no matter what I decided to do, it would somehow apply.
My favorite professors at NIU are … Dr. Kerry Ferris and Dr. Pablo Virumbrales. Dr. Ferris is one of the most intelligent and witty professors that I have come across at Northern. She teaches us in a way that makes everything seem applicable to life. Dr. Virumbrales made my two conversation classes in Spanish entertaining and worthwhile.
My favorite thing to do on campus is … hang out with my fellow community advisors in Douglas Hall. We have been through a lot this last semester, and we have developed some pretty strong friendships.
Outside of the classroom, my favorite thing at NIU that really enhances my experience here is … the people that I have met as a community advisor. Each year, I get to meet 50 or so new people, learn about their backgrounds and hopefully give them some helpful advice every once in a while.
When I have free time, I like to … spend time with my boyfriend of six years, Stefan. We have been doing this whole college thing for a while, and we’re ready to move on!
One thing I wish I knew about actual college life before I got here is … how tempting it is to order late-night food. I would have dieted before I got here so I could order El Burrito Loco whenever I wanted!
One positive thing I have learned about myself since coming to NIU is … people look to me for advice and guidance. I am able to take leadership roles in almost everything that I choose to do.
If I was guaranteed success, I would … open a Mexican restaurant in my hometown. My mom and I have always wanted to manage one together. I would call it “La Cocina de Mama” after a lady who used to work for my mom at McDonald’s. She made the best tamales known to man.
After graduation, I plan to … either continue to work at the American Red Cross or look into a position in human resources for McDonald’s Corp.
The one NIU experience I will always remember will be … having a snow day the day after my 21st birthday. It was like two days to celebrate instead of just one!
