String students at Northern Illinois University enjoy a wide variety of instructional and ensemble opportunities.

Bachelor of Music degree options include performance, music education, composition, and the Bachelor of Arts in Music. Master of Music programs are available in performance and the individualized specialization. We also offer the post-master's Performer's Certificate.

Applied string instrument instruction is provided in a variety of individual and group settings taught by School of Music faculty. In addition to several chamber groups featuring string instruments, students audition for and participate in the NIU Philharmonic. String students may also participate in the Campus String Orchestra, which combines for concerts with the regional Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra.
