NIU Professor and coordinator of music theory and composition, Robert Fleisher, recently returned from the Region VIII conference of the Society of Composers, Inc. (SCI) at the University of Puget Sound (Tacoma, WA), held March 5-6. Dr. Fleisher was one of 42 composers from all over North America (incl. Canada) selected to participate, after 174 works were considered. His 2004 composition for solo cello, Ma mère, received an outstanding performance there by NIU alum, Dr. Katri Ervamaa (University of Michigan) in a program featuring members of the new music ensemble, Brave New Works. Dr. Fleisher also enjoyed seeing another NIU alum, Dr. Andrew Walters, whose composition for flute and 2-channel electroacoustic playback, Moth to Flame, was performed during the conference.

School of Music alumna Carrie Provost (M.M., 1992) was named the
Outstanding School Orchestra Teacher for 2009 by the Illinois American
String Teachers Association. She was honored at the ASTA meeting at the
IMEA conference in Peoria in January, 2010. Pictured below are Carrie (center)
