Kathryn Swope is an Applied Artist at Northern Illinois University where she directs the University Band and teaches Brass Techniques. She is a regular horn substitute for the Illinois Symphony Orchestra in Springfield, IL and holds permanent positions with the Chicago Gargoyle Brass, the Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra and the Millikin-Decatur Symphony Orchestra. Kate also maintains a private studio at the Northern Illinois Community School of the Arts where she teaches horn and beginning trumpet lessons.

Kate received the Bachelor of Music (with Honors) and a Master of Music in Horn Performance from the University of Louisville School of Music, as well as a Performer’s Certificate in Horn from Northern Illinois University. Kate’s primary horn teachers have included Bruce Heim and John Fairfield, with additional instruction from Tod Bowermaster of the St. Louis Symphony, Bernhard Scully of the Canadian Brass and Stephen Hanrahan of the Illinois Symphony.

In addition to playing horn, Kate has always had a passion for conducting. While attending the University of Louisville, she received conducting lessons from Dr. Frederick Speck and Professor Kimcherie Lloyd, and has since completed a second Master’s degree in Wind Band Conducting from Northern Illinois University under the tutelage of Dr. Ronnie Wooten.
