Voice Audition Information

Students should be prepared to sing two classically-oriented songs or arias for their voice audition.  Music must be memorized.  One song must be in English; the other should be in a foreign language. The English selection may be chosen from the musical theatre repertory, preferably from the era of Rodgers and Hammerstein and before, or in that style.  Suggested aria repertoire:  Mozart, Rossini, Verdi, Puccini.  Suggested song repertoire:  Schubert, Schumann, Ravel, Brahms.  Comparable material may be subsituted.

You must be able to read music.  To demonstrate this, there will be a simple sight-reading exam at the audition.

An accompanist will be provided for school auditions.  Please come prepared with sheet music that is legible.  If copies are used, kindly present them in a three-ring binder.  Recorded accompaniment is not acceptable at school auditions.

For students auditioning for the Master of Music program, please be prepared to sing three pieces, preferably one from every genre: opera, oratorio, and song, and in three languages. Three style periods should be represented as well (Baroque, Classic, Romantic, or 20th century).

For graduate students auditioning for the Performer's Certificate, a more extensive audition is required.  Students are requested to demonstrate professional-level knowledge of the opera, oratorio, and song literatures in the four major languages:  German, French, Italian, and English.  Please prepare five audition selections.
