David Maki joined the theory and composition faculty in the fall of 2002. Dr. Maki grew up in Glenview, Illinois, a northern suburb of Chicago, and is an alumnus of NIU, having earned his B. Mus. in composition in 1989. While a student here, he studied composition with A. Oscar Haugland, Lee Cloud and Jan Bach, and piano with Donald Walker
In 1996, he earned an M.A. in composition from the University of Iowa, where he studied composition with David Gompper. While at Iowa, Dr. Maki was very active as a performer of new music, premiering many student works, as well as serving as pianist for the University of Iowa Center for New Music, the University of Iowa Philharmonic, and the Cedar Rapids Symphony. In 1996, he accepted a position on the faculty of Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, where he taught undergraduate music theory and aural skills. In 2003, Dr. Maki earned his D.M.A. in composition from the University of Michigan, where he was a Regents Fellow in Music. While at Michigan, he studied composition with Evan Chambers, Bright Sheng and Michael Daugherty, and studied piano with Logan Skelton.
Dr. Maki is pleased to be back at the NIU School of Music, where he is currently teaching undergraduate music theory and aural skills, as well as private composition lessons.
