Legal Aid Lawyers
The right to a court appointed attorney does not apply in civil cases. If you are a student at NIU, you may be eligible for court representation from our office. You may also seek assistance from a “legal aid” office. In our area, Prairie State Legal Services provides assistance to eligible persons primarily in the areas of landlord/tenant, domestic abuse, and denial of public benefits (800-942-4612, www.pslegal.org). There are organizations like Prairie State throughout the country. Most are under-funded and cannot begin to provide legal assistance to all the indigent persons who need it. You can also check with the local bar association in your area. Many have volunteer, “pro bono,” programs in which local private attorneys donate time advising and even representing poor persons.
