Technology News for Fall 2014 and Spring 2015

All residence hall rooms and Northern View Community apartments have high-speed Internet access and NIU Wi-Fi. To get online with any Internet enabled device (desktop, laptop, tablet, smart phone, etc.) simply open a web browser to be redirected to a web page where you will login with your Z-ID and password. That’s it!

NIU and Housing & Dining expect students to prepare their computer or laptop as follows prior to coming to NIU:

  • Make sure the Operating System is configured for automatic security updates
    • As of April 8, 2014, Microsoft will no longer support Windows XP; we highly recommend that if you’re bringing a Windows device to campus it should be running Windows Vista or higher.
  • Install Anti-Virus software and make sure it is configured for automatic updates (NIU provides McAfee Enterprise free of charge; download at http://www.students.niu.edu/provisioning/)
    • IMPORTANT: to avoid problems with your computer, uninstall all anti-virus software before installing another anti-virus program
  • Wired NIC (Network Interface Controller) and RJ-45 Ethernet cable are required to use the in-room connection
  • Wireless 802.11 b/g/n NIC and Operating system that supports WPA Enterprise and PEAP/EAP-MSCHAPv2 authentication are required to use NIU Wi-Fi (refer to http://securenet.niu.edu for details; refer to http://restech.niu.edu/WPACompatible for information about WPA Enterprise device compatibility).

Personal routers and/or wireless access points are prohibited. Unmanaged hubs and switches can be used if residents want to connect more than one network device in their room. Stevenson residents sharing a bedroom may check out a hub at the ResTech Helpdesk in Stevenson 110C if they need to connect more than one device to the network.

Student Home Drive Enhancements

Beginning fall 2013, all NIU students will benefit from two major enhancements to the student home drive (H drive) service.

  • More space. H drives will increase from 200MB to 5GB.
  • Anywhere access. H drives will be accessible from a web browser at https://anywherefiles.niu.edu, as well as through a mobile application.

This information as well as more information on Anywhere Files, the mobile application, and guides on using Google Sites is available at http://its.niu.edu/its/anywhere/files/index.shtml

Computer Labs and Anywhere Printing

Computer Labs

Residence hall computer labs are open 24/7 and are located in Neptune North, Douglas, Grant, Stevenson, and Northern View Community. Anywhere Printing

Anywhere Printing enables students to print and copy in color and black & white, and scan to USB or email from labs or from any personal device with an Internet connection. Students’ print quota and pay-for-print can all be retrieved from any of the Anywhere Printers on campus. For more information about Anywhere Printing and NIU print policies, check out the signs near the Anywhere Printers, or the ITS web site. Print jobs can be retrieved at any of the forty multi-function machines around campus, including eleven in the residence halls:

  • Douglas Hall 1st floor lobby and Douglas Computer Lab
  • Gilbert Hall 1st floor lounge
  • Grant North Computer lab
  • Neptune Computer Lab
  • Neptune Central, 1st floor
