Technology News

NIU provides a wired Internet connection in all student rooms, and NIU Wi-Fi in all student rooms, floor lounges, and public locations in the residence halls. Every Northern View Community apartment has at least two wired connections and NIU Wi-Fi throughout.  All connections provide access to the NIU Network and campus computing resources.

NIU and Housing & Dining expect students to prepare their computer or laptop as follows prior to coming to NIU:

  • Make sure the Operating System is configured for automatic security updates
    • As of April 8, 2014, Microsoft will no longer support Windows XP; we highly recommend that if you’re bringing a Windows device to campus it should be running Windows Vista or higher.
  • Install Anti-Virus software and make sure it is configured for automatic updates (NIU provides McAfee Enterprise free of charge; download at
    • IMPORTANT: to avoid problems with your computer, uninstall all anti-virus software before installing another anti-virus program
  • Wired NIC (Network Interface Controller) and RJ-45 Ethernet cable are required to use the in-room connection
  • Wireless 802.11 b/g/n NIC and Operating system that supports WPA Enterprise and PEAP/EAP-MSCHAPv2 authentication are required to use NIU Wi-Fi (refer to for details; refer to for information about WPA Enterprise device compatibility).

Personal routers and/or wireless access points are prohibited. Unmanaged hubs and switches can be used if residents want to connect more than one network device to a jack.

Computer Labs

Residence hall computer labs are open 24/7 and are located in Neptune North, Grant North, Stevenson, and Northern View Community. There are also lab workstations in hall lobbies, in the Gilbert Hall 1st floor lounge, and in the New Hall Community Building. For fall 2014 we have collaborated with the Provost and the ACCESS program to create an Academic Support Center in Grant South, featuring:

  • NIU Wi-Fi throughout the space;
  • Tutoring Center in the lower level;
  • a computer lab classroom, hosting First Year Composition classes - this lab is open to all students when classes are not in session;
  • a group study area, lounge furniture, tables with power for laptop users, vending machines, and an Anywhere Printer in the 1st floor lobby.

NIU Wi-Fi in the Residence Halls

NIU Wi-Fi is available in all residents' rooms, in the floor lounges, in public locations in every residence hall and in the Northern View Community apartments and Community Building. This includes all meetings rooms, dining rooms, laundry rooms, computer labs, and the Neptune Central 1st floor fireplace lounge and Trident.
