Northern View Community Application Process

NVC Availability

Thank you for your interest in living in Northern View Community! We are now accepting applications for the 2015-2016 academic year!  To be eligible for Northern View Community, students must be 20+ years old, 2 full years beyond high school graduation, and/or have a dependent child/children.

Priority Placement for Graduate Students and Families:
Northern View is committed to providing convenient on-campus living for our Graduate students and students with families. Therefore, priority placement is provided for applicants who submit an application between now and January 30, 2015, who have been accepted to the NIU Graduate School, who submit a birth certificate as proof of having a dependent child/children, and/or submit a marriage certificate as proof of legal partnership.

Current residents will receive intent forms in November, for the following academic year, and will have first priority to stay in Northern View Community. Placement in the exact same apartment number/building may not be guaranteed depending on Graduate or family status. After current residents are placed, Graduate and Family Priority Applicants will be placed on a first-come, first-served basis, while space is available.  After January 30th, any remaining apartments will be offered to non-priority applicants, on a first-come, first-served basis, while space is available.

To apply: Print the 2015-2016 application below and return to the Northern View Community Center Office in person, or by mail. All applications require a non-refundable, $25 application fee, check or money-order only, made out to: Northern Illinois University (unless currently living in NIU on-campus housing). If you plan to have additional occupants, you must also submit a copy of your dependent’s birth certificate, and/or a copy of your marriage certificate and copy of your partner’s state-issued photo ID at the time of application. When your application and application fee are received, you will be added to the waitlist and contacted as soon as an opening becomes available. If you are offered a contract, you will have 10 business days to accept and submit a $125 deposit fee, check or money order only (unless currently living in NIU on-campus housing).

Spring 2014
We are currently full for the 2014-2015 Academic year, but may have limited openings for Spring 2014. You are still welcome to submit an application for our waitlist, should any spaces become available. During the academic year we will continue to offer contracts to individuals on our waitlist if openings arise.

Buildings 3 & 5

Buildings 3 and 5 are open to all NIU students who are at least 20+ years old or two full years beyond high school graduation. Students contract for one bedroom in a two-bedroom unit, they are typically placed with a random same-gender roommate, and these buildings do not accommodate dependents. Depending on interest, one of these buildings may be designated for graduate students only.

Buildings 2, 4 & 6

Northern View Community Buildings 2, 4, and 6, are known as the Family-style buildings and have one, two, and three-bedroom units available. Here residents contract for the entire apartment, they are responsible for finding their own roommates, and are able to have non-NIU student dependents live with them, such as children or spouses, so long as they provide a copy of their dependent’s birth certificate and/or a copy of their marriage certificate and spouse’s state-issued photo ID, and fill out the appropriate paperwork.

There are only 6 one-bedroom and 6 three-bedroom units in the community and the waitlist may be extensive at times. Be sure to indicate on your application the order of your preferences so we can best accommodate you if your first choice is not available.
