Requirements are as follows:

  • Must attend one of the information sessions listed below
  • Must have completed 24 credit hours by the end of the semester in which they are applying
  • Have at least a 2.3 semester and cumulative GPA
  • Available for meetings on Thursdays from 3:30-5:30 p.m.
  • One semester group living experience.


Community Advisor's responsibilities include:

  • Assisting residents with personal and academic concerns.
  • Encouraging the development of mature behavior among residents.
  • Maintaining an atmosphere conducive to academic excellence.
  • Coordinating programs and events that address the academic and personal needs of residents, using the Residential Curriculum model.
  • Enforcing University policy and regulations, as listed in the Guide Post.

 

What is the required GPA?

Minimum cumulative NIU GPA of 2.3 semester and cumulative at the time of application. If you do not have an NIU GPA at the time of application, you MUST submit an official transcript from your previous institution.

 

What does it mean to be in good judicial standing?

Your record must be free of current or pending violations within Housing & Dining, and the Office of Community Standards and Student Conduct, including a clear status in regards to disciplinary probation.

 

What is group living experience?

Have at least one semester of group living experience (residence halls, military, etc).

 

Can I hold other positions while I am a CA?

Please expect not to hold outside positions during the following times:
During CA training two weeks before fall classes and one week before spring classes.
During your first semester as a CA. After first semester, CAs may work up to 10 hours with supervisor approval.

 

What does it mean to be a full time student?

Be enrolled as a full-time student (no less than 12 undergraduate or nine graduate credit hours) at the time of application. You must have at least 24 NIU credit hours by end of the semester applying.

 

What if I am a transfer student?

If you do not have an NIU GPA at the time of application,
you MUST submit an official transcript from your previous institution.

 

How many nights away do I get per semester?

You will get 10 nights away from your room each semester, so about one weekend per month.

 

How often will I be on duty?

On average about one night per week and one weekend per month, depending on your building and staff.

 

What meetings will I have to attend as a CA?

Staff meetings are once a week, individual meetings with your supervisor are weekly or bi-weekly, Hall Council, and monthly in-services on Thursdays from 3:30-5:00 p.m.
