Illinois Homeland Security
Education Alliance (IHSEA)

Recognizing the importance of sharing homeland security resources and unique faculty expertise, the Illinois Board of Higher Education awarded NIU and Western Illinois University an Innovation grant to establish the Illinois Homeland Security Education Alliance (IHSEA).

Northern Illinois University and Western Illinois University launched the Illinois Homeland Security Education Alliance (IHSEA) in January 2007. Half of Illinois’ public universities participated in an initial meeting of the Alliance.

Mission Statement

The Illinois Homeland Security Education Alliance is a consortium of Illinois Public Universities designed to enhance the homeland security knowledge base in ways not possible as individual institutions. This collaboration facilitates course sharing, innovative curriculum development and delivery, and development of an informational clearinghouse of homeland security resources. The Alliance broadens educational opportunities by expanding access, making cost-effective use of existing assets and creating a strong base to attract new resources. The Alliance provides a means for Illinois higher education institutions to advance achievement of the state’s goal to become the leader in homeland security.

How IHSEA Works

  • University leadership makes a commitment
  • Faculty determine the curriculum and teach the shared courses
  • Operations staff work together to coordinate technologies and seamless transfer of credit.
